The Aichi University (Japanese爱 知 大学, Aichi daigaku ) is a private university in Japan. The main campus is located in Toyohashi in Aichi Prefecture.

The name Aichi (爱 知) comes from the translation from the Greek word φιλοσοφία ( philosophia, dt literally, " love of wisdom ", see: philosophy), not only from the prefecture name.

History

Founded as the University in November 1946 by former professors and students at the ToA Dōbunshoin University (东 亜 同 文书 院 大学), which was until August 1945 in Shanghai. The TOA Dōbunshoin in 1901 by the Japanese TOA Dōbun Society (东 亜 同 文 会, Toa dōbun kai; Toa called " East Asia ", Dōbun " people with the same character" ) was founded. She served the Japanese students in China as a research center of modern Chinese studies. In 1939 she gained university status. In August 1945, when Japan was defeated in the Pacific War, the school buildings were occupied by the Chinese administration, and the professors and students returned to Japan.

After 1949 China was a communist state, continued the University nor the China Studies, and in 1968 she published a Chinese- Japanese Dictionary (中 日 大 辞典, Chū - nichi dai jiten ). She founded in 1991 the Department of Chinese Studies in the Graduate School, 1997, the Faculty of Modern Chinese Studies.

The main campus ( Toyohashi Campus ) was the former home of a military base of the Japanese army, and the old main building ( built in 1908 ) now serves as a museum for the history of the university.
