Aiken is a city and administrative headquarters simultaneously ( County Seat) of Aiken County in the U.S. state of South Carolina.

Geography

Aiken is located at 33 ° 32'58 " north latitude and 81 ° 43'14 " west longitude. At a distance of around 80 kilometers, Columbia is in a northeasterly direction. Augusta is located 20 kilometers to the west. The northern districts are affected by Interstate 20. The Savannah River flows 15 kilometers away and divides the West, the states of South Carolina and Georgia.

History

The city was named after William Aiken, president of the South Carolina Canal and Railroad Company, was established in 1835. After the end of the American Civil War from 1870 wealthy citizens of Charleston and the more northerly regions Aiken began to use it as a resort.

In 1950, the United States Atomic Energy Commission chose a site in the immediate vicinity of Aiken as the site of a plant for the production of raw materials for nuclear weapons. The facility was named the Savannah River Plant, which was renamed in 1989 in Savannah River Site.

Demographic data

In 2010, a population of 29 524 individuals was determined, which represents an increase of 16.5 % over 2000. The average age in 2010 was 44.8 years and was thus higher than the comparable figure in the state of South Carolina, which was 40.2 years.
