The Academy of Sciences and Literature in Mainz ( Mainz - AdW ) is a German Academy of Sciences.

History

The Academy of Sciences and Literature Mainz was founded on July 9, 1949 by scholars and writers in Mainz for the purpose of cultivation of the sciences and of literature and the preservation and promotion of culture. The founding fathers included, among others, Alfred Döblin and Raymond Schmittlein.

The association is in the tradition of Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, who, while he worked at the court of the Elector of Mainz, a first concept for such an institution developed, according to which the modern Academy of Sciences is still working today.

It was founded with the support of the French Cultural authority mainly by former members of the Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin, who had moved to the end of the Second World War in the West. The tradition of the Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin was continued after the founding of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) in the Academy of Sciences of the GDR. The Academy funded the creation of the word Atlas of Continental Germanic terminology winemaker at the Institute of Historical Regional Studies at the University of Mainz.

Organization

The AdW -Mainz is a corporation under public law. On the one hand one the country's borders border scholars society, on the other hand, the wearer of various research projects and organizer of scientific conferences and symposia. The AdW -Mainz is also a member of the Union of the German Academies of Sciences.

The Academy sets in their work focuses on the area of long-term basic research, provided it is supported by other institutions such as the Max Planck Society.

The AdW -Mainz coordinated on behalf of the Union of the German Academies of Sciences and many total expenditure well-known composers ( Bach Edition, Haydn Complete Edition, Mozart Edition, Wagner's total output, Carl- Maria -von- Weber- Complete Edition, Schoenberg Complete Edition ) and the Répertoire International des Sources Musicales ( RISM ) with a central editorial office at the University library in Frankfurt am Main.

The AdW -Mainz has three classes:

  • Mathematics and science class, in with, among other topics: medical and basic biological research
  • Virus and biodiversity
  • Earth sciences
  • Climate Research
  • Emergence of the German welfare state: source collection on the history of German social policy 1867-1914
  • Revision of Regesta Imperii
  • Publication of scientific dictionaries ( Russian - German, Lessico Etimologico Italiano)
  • Edition medieval and early modern inscriptions ( Hesse, Rhineland -Palatinate and Saarland, within the international academic project The German inscriptions )
  • Documentation of medieval stained glass ( CVMA )
  • Acquisition and cataloging of funeral sermons of the early modern period ( Research Centre for Personal Writings)
  • Publication of the Mainz Series ( Literature Research papers, biographies and work issues)
  • Awarding of literary prizes ( Joseph Breitbach Prize, poetry lecturer )

Each class has 30 neat and up to 50 corresponding members. While the ordinary members from the ranks of professors and writers from all over Germany are selected, the corresponding members are internationally renowned scientists. An innovation in 2010 was the extension of the class literature to the field of music and the election of renowned musicians and composers.

President of the Academy is orientalist Gernot Wilhelm.

The Academy of Sciences and Literature, Mainz, award the following prizes:

  • Balzac Award ( Literary award, which was awarded only once. Prize winner in 1952 was the writer Erwin M. Schneider. )
