Akaflieg München Mü13

The Akaflieg München Mü 13 is a glider student Fliegergruppe Akaflieg Munich and was designed by Egon disc with the participation of Kurt Schmidt and Tony Tröger. She was considered one of the most successful gliders her time and was in a two-seat variant of Scheibe Flugzeugbau GmbH under the name Mü 13 E Bergfalke one of the most popular training aircraft in the postwar period.

History

Due to the success of the mu 10 and at the urging of Kurt Schmidt Egon disc began in 1935 with the construction of a single-seat glider. There were then two prototypes, the Mü 13 " Merlin " and Mü 13 " Atalante ", built. Particular attention, mainly focused on co-constructor Tony Tröger the opportunity to subsequently be able to install a motor. Thus, the " Merlin" is a 1937 equipped with an engine and designated as an " engine Merlin ".

The " Atalante ", however, which was built with a lot of personal and financial commitment by Kurt Schmidt, was a glider and later was flown by the 17th Rhön competition for the first time. He won superior to the competition and the " Atalante " became one of the most successful gliders of the 1930s. 1939 a variant of the " Atalante " was built as Mü 13 D of the company Black Forest aircraft Wilhelm Jehle in Donaueschingen. Of the 150 cars built today several are preserved.

In 1951, Egon disc, the disc Flugzeugbau GmbH and built the first plane to the disc Mü 13 E Bergfalke I. These were a two-seat version of the mu 13 The Mountain Hawks series was one of the most popular training aircraft in the postwar period.

Construction

By Mü 13, founded by Egon disc Munich School finally celebrated her breakthrough. The Mü 13 shared with its predecessor, the Mü 10 steel tube fuselage, the profile and the tail assembly. The surfaces were made in wood. Due to the low weight of the fuselage and the tail short, the cockpit is about to surface. This leads to a restricted field of view of the pilot, which will be partially offset by additional side windows in the hull. Were attached over the entire length of the surfaces in order to improve the slow loops in the thermal valve.

Variants

Mü 13 D

Building on the successful Mü 13 " Atalante " Black Forest aircraft Wilhelm Jehle in Donaueschingen was the variant Mü 13 D1 manufactured from 1939 at the company company. The Mü 13 D1 was again up to a variant Mü 13 D3 developed with extended hull and larger rudder, which was first built in 1942. Of the three types until end of the war a total of 150 pieces were made. In the 1950s, three aircraft were copied by gliding clubs.

Disc Mü 13 E Bergfalke I

After the Second World War Egon disc designed a two-seat version of the mu 13 and drove them very successfully as a training aircraft with his Scheibe Flugzeugbau GmbH.

Mü 13 "Motor Merlin "

1937 Engine type quiver Kröber M4 with 18 hp in the Mü 13 " Merlin" is a retrofitted. By using slow mu- mu profile could the 13 " motor Merlin " with 45 km / h can be landed, which explains the absence of a wheel brake. The motor glider reached a top speed of 125 km / h
