Đakovo Cathedral

As a cathedral to Đakovo (Croatian: Đakovačka katedrala ) or Strossmayer 's Cathedral, the neo-Romanesque bishop's church is called, which is the most visible symbol of the Croatian town Đakovo. The sacred building has a patron saint the saints Peter and Paul, and serves as the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Đakovo - Osijek.

Architectural History

Construction of the cathedral was done on behalf of Bishop Josip Juraj Strossmayer and lasted 16 years ( 1866-1882 ). He has been funded with the substantial revenue of the bishopric from agriculture. The architects were the famous Viennese architect Carl Roesner and Friedrich von Schmidt. The cathedral is located in the east-west direction. As building material were native red façade bricks and stones that give at critical locations to build greater strength. At the end of the building about 7 million bricks were installed.

In 1933 there was a fire in the cathedral, the renovations took place from 1933 until 1936. On April 13, 1963 there was an earthquake in the area around Slavonski Brod and Đakovo, which also affected the cathedral. The renovations lasted from 1964 until 1969.

Architecture

The Neo-Romanesque façade is provided in a simple style and with little jewelry. All three portals are made of white stone.

The height of the towers is 84 meters. The dome measures 59 feet outside and inside 40 yards. Inside, the cathedral 74 meters long and 27 meters high ( nave ). In contrast, the side aisles have only a height of 15 meters, while the length of the transept is 52 meters.

The expansive space is furnished with frescoes of painter Alexander Maximilian Seitz and his son Ludwig Seitz, an intense, colorful illustrated Bible, which also pictures of the residents of South East Europe can be seen: Croats, Bosnians, Bulgarians, Muslims, Serbs. The sculptures were Vatroslav ( Ignazio ) Doneganu, which held the construction management.

Inside the cathedral builder Strossmayer was carved on the Bauzweck of the Church:

" The glory of God the unity of the churches of harmony and love my people "

The high altar is not in unison, but under the crossing. Here, the Mass for the people has been read. Above the altar hangs a dove. In the altar area no cross can be seen.

In the crypt of the cathedral is Bishop Strossmayer's grave.
