Kusseir (Arabic القصير al - Quseir, French Qousseir, Turkish Kuseyr ), also al - Kusair or al - Qusayr, is a city in the province of Homs in western Syria. The city has about 37 899 inhabitants (estimate 2003).

History

During the civil war in Syria, the city was the scene of battles between the Syrian army and the Free Syrian Army. The town was captured in May 2012 by the insurgents. The Syrian army launched on May 19, 2013 together with the Hezbollah militia fighters launched an offensive to retake the city. By Kusseir leads the strategically important road connecting the city of Homs in Lebanon. Until the conquest of the city by government troops and pro-regime militias on June 5, 2013, it was regarded as the hub of the Lebanese supply routes of the rebels.

After the fighting ended survived from the original 30,000, only about 500 people in the city, all the buildings were either destroyed or taken by at least one grenade. Journalists described the city after a first inspection as de facto dead
