Alagón (river)

Rio Alagon at Sotoserrano

The Alagon (Spanish: Río Alagon ) with 201 km length of the longest tributary of the Tagus.

It rises in the province of Salamanca, western Spain. On the upper and middle reaches it flows through very sparsely populated land of Castile. Behind Sottoserrano it traverses in a narrow valley natural park Las Batuecas -Sierra de Francia. In the middle reaches of the river in the Embalse de Gabriel y Galán is dammed, the dam on the peninsula almost surrounded the ghost town of Granadilla and is equal to it in the reservoir of the Embalse de Valdebispo. About 50 miles off the mouth it flows past Coria, the only town along its course. In Alcántara in the province of Extremadura it flows into the Tagus, where both rivers together form the dam of the Embalse de Alcántara.
