Alamo is a city in the U.S. state of Georgia. The settlement, which has developed around 1890 in the vicinity of a former railway depot was declared a town in 1909 and serves in the year 1912 since the creation of Wheeler County as its administrative headquarters. The name of the city (Spanish for poplar) was proposed by the daughter of a judge and later Senator John McCrae in memory of a former mission station in San Antonio. The first mayor of Alamo was JM Fordham.

Geography

Alamo is located northwest in Wheeler County. The nearby towns are Scotland, Glenwood and McRae. The nearest major town, Macon, located about 123 kilometers north-west, the capital of Georgia, Atlanta, about 274 miles northwest. The city covers an area of ​​5 km ².

Population

According to the 2000 census, the population is 1,943, of which 72.1 % men and 27.9 % women. The average age of the citizens of Alamo is 34.6 years. 52.6 % of residents are African American, 46.4 % White and 0.9 % Hispanics. The average annual income per household is $ 25,000 well below the U.S. average ( $ 41,994 ). Approximately 24.8 % of the population live below the poverty line. Thus, the share of the poor is twice as high as in the U.S. average (12.4%). The significant surplus of men due to the fact that a private prison was in Alamo on behalf of the State of Georgia opened in 1998, which explains the high rate of population growth ( 127.3 %) between the censuses of 1990 and 2000.

Public institutions

Alamo has two public schools, the Wheeler County Elementary and the Wheeler County High School. There is no public hospital in the city. The nearest hospitals are located in Glenwood and in McRae.

Structures

Where was held 1912-1914, in the first two years after the founding of Wheeler County Courthouse, is not known. 1914 a courthouse was built, which has a fire in 1916 completely destroyed. The neoclassical building which was created in 1917 as a replacement for it, is recorded in the cultural monument list of the U.S. federal government.
