Alan Howarth, Baron Howarth of Newport

Alan Thomas Howarth, Baron Howarth of Newport, CBE, PC, ( born June 11, 1944) is a British Labour Party politician.

Youth and Education

He is the son of Major Thomas Howarth MC, the rector of King Edward 's School in Birmingham, Deputy Rector of Winchester College and Rector of St Paul's School ( London). His mother Margaret Teakle was during the World War WREN. He graduated in 1965 with a BA in History at King's College (Cambridge).

Political career

Howarth from 1983 was a deputy of the Conservative Party in the House of Commons for the electoral district of Stratford-on- Avon. He was from 1989 to 1992 Parliamentary Under- Secretary of State in the Ministry of Education ( Department for Education and Skills ).

Party transfer

In 1995, he stepped over by the Conservative Party to Labour; he was the first deputy who converted directly from the Conservatives to Labour. and the first former Conservative who sat for Labour in the House since Sir Oswald Mosley. He claimed a seat as a Labour candidate and after he had unsuccessfully running for the constituencies Wentworth and Wythenshawe and Sale East, he got the safe Labour seat of Newport East constituency in Wales. His opponent was the leader of the Union of Mineworkers, Arthur Scargill, who competed for the Socialist Labour Party.

After the election of 1997, he was Under Secretary in the Ministry of Education and Employment and was the following year, Minister in the Ministry of Culture, Media and Sport. He is also a member of the Privy Council. After the parliamentary election in 2001, he lost his post. At the 2005 general election he no longer went to. Jessica Morden became his successor.

On 13 May 2005 he was appointed zm Life Peer was announced and he was raised as Baron Howarth of Newport for Life peer on 16 June 2005.

Controversy

He was criticized when it was revealed that he and his partner Baroness Hollis live in the immediate neighborhood, but have settled both charges against the House of Lords. He and Baroness Hollis is one of the few couples who both have a title in its own right.
