Patricia Hollis, Baroness Hollis of Heigham

Patricia Lesley Hollis, Baroness Hollis of Heigham PC, DL ( born May 24, 1941) is a British politician, who sits for Labour in the House of Lords.

She studied at Cambridge, California and New York and a doctorate in Oxford (MA, DPhil ).

She was from 1967 to 1990 Lecturer in Modern History, and Dean at the University of East Anglia in Norwich. From 1988 to 1991 she was National Commissioner of English Heritage. She was married to the philosopher Martin Hollis until his death in 1998; they have two sons, one is the poet Matthew Hollis.

In the British general election in February 1974, she won the electoral district of Great Yarmouth and settled again in October 1974 and in the elections of 1979 into parliament. She had been active since 1968 in the policy; 1968-1991 she was sitting in the Norwich City Council. Hollis worked from 1988 to 1990 for the Press Council and was from 1983 to 1997 Director of Radio Broadland.

On June 1, 1990 Hollis was raised as Baroness Hollis of Heigham for Life Peeress. From 1990 to 1995 she was Whip of the Opposition in the House of Lords from 1990 and spokesperson for Housing, Local Government, the Environment, and Social Security Disability. During her time in the House it was, inter alia, actively involved in the adoption of the law on the division of pensions in a divorce.

From 1997 to 2005 she was Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for Work and Pensions. She was appointed to the Privy Council in 1999 and is currently Deputy Lieutenant of Norfolk.

She is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, Honorary Fellow of Girton College and author of several books on the history of women and the world of work. Her book Jennie Lee: a life won the 1998 Orwell Prize and the Wolfson History Prize. 2001, she was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Open University.

Controversy

She was criticized when it was revealed that she and her partner Baron Howarth live in the immediate neighborhood, but have settled both charges against the House of Lords. They are one of the few couples who both have a title in its own right.
