Albarine

The river in Tenay

Cascade de Charabotte

The Albarine is a river in France, which runs in the Rhône-Alpes region in the department of Ain. It rises in the southern Jura, in the municipality of Brénod on a karstic plateau and drained initially towards the south. In Nantuy in the municipality of Hauteville- Lompnes the Albarine falls over the majestic waterfall Cascade de Charabotte in a gorge-like valley, swung into multiple loops towards the west and ends after a total of 59 kilometers in the municipality of Châtillon- la- Pallud as a left tributary of the Ain. On their way the Albarine crosses the landscape Bugey.

Hydrology

The water supply of the Albarine is highly dependent on the seasons and the rainfall. In the summer and during dry periods the water seeps over again in the karst underground, sometimes the river disappears completely from the surface.
