Albennie Jones

Albinia Jones ( born November 29, 1914 in Gulfport ( Mississippi); † June 24, 1989 in New York City ) was an American blues and jazz singer of the 1940s.

Life and work

Jones sang in her youth in the choir of Holy Mt Baptist Church in Gulfport. She came to New York in 1932 and had in Elk's Club Rendez -vous her first professional engagement; by the great success she remained there for nine months. Later she also sang in nightclubs Club Harlem, the Village Vanguard and the Murrains Cafe. End of the 1930s emerged first recordings; In the early 1940s, she worked with jazz musicians such as Lester Young and Dizzy Gillespie, whose compositions she sang.
