Alberic of Utrecht

Alberic I of Utrecht ( † 21 August or November 14 784 ) had been 777/778 Bishop of Utrecht. He is a saint of the Catholic Church.

He was a great-grandson of the abbess Adela of Pfalzel. To what extent he was descended from the Merovingian dynasty, or whether he had Anglo-Saxon ancestors, is not safe to occupy. Maybe he was one of the Hugo Berti Africans.

Alberich was a monk in the Benedictine monastery of St. Martin in Utrecht. In the year 775 he traveled on behalf of Charlemagne to Italy. Shortly after his return died of Abbot Gregory of St. Martin, who was also the uncle of Alberich. He was succeeded as abbot by Alberich. Like his uncle, he was also acting head of the Frisian church, the bishop's seat was vacant. In the year 777 or 778, he was ordained in Cologne for the Bishop of Utrecht.

As a result, the Frisian Church broke from the old Anglo-Saxon bonds, and was transferred to the Frankish church system. The Diocese of Utrecht was recognized by the Archdiocese of Cologne.

Bishop Alberic promoted the mission among the Frisians. He had systematically destroy pagan places of worship in his sphere of influence. He sent Liudger (later Bishop of Münster) in the Ostergau. Alberich was built by him the church in Deventer again.

Alberich was interested in the sciences. He was friends with, among others, Alcuin. In his sphere of influence he reformed the cathedral school in Utrecht.

In Sustern his remains are venerated as relics. His feast days are November 14, March 4 and 21 August.
