Albert Atterberg

Albert Mauritz Atterberg ( born March 19, 1846 in Härnösand, † April 4, 1916 in Kalmar) was a Swedish chemist and soil mechanics.

Atterberg studied in Stockholm and Uppsala, was from 1877 director of the Agricultural Research Institute in Kalmar and later became a lecturer in chemistry at the University of Uppsala. He introduced in 1911 the consistency limits of soils ( shrinkage limit, plastic limit and liquid limit ) a. They are after him as " Atterberg limits " or " state borders to Atterberg " known, see consistency ( bottom ). His method of measurement for this was further developed by Arthur Casagrande.
