History

In the area of Albert I Land Willem Barents discovered with his crew on June 17, 1596 Spitsbergen. Because the steep coast and the mountains were pointed, he gave his discovery the name Spitsbergen. Later, many Bowhead whales have been sighted in the adjacent sea area, whereupon the early whalers their blubber ovens and other storage einrichteten on these shores. Therefore, one finds in this region particularly many remnants of these first settlers on Spitsbergen.

Albert I country bears his name in honor of Albert I of Monaco, the multiple Svalbard expeditions financially supported by the turn of the 20th century and carried out.

Albert I Land is located entirely within the Nordvest - Spitsbergen National Park.
