Albertina Sisulu

Albertina Sisulu Nontsikelelo ( born October 21, 1918 in Cofimvaba, then Transkei, † June 2, 2011 in Johannesburg) was a South African anti-apartheid activist and the wife of anti-apartheid activist Walter Sisulu ( 1912-2003 ).

In 1942 she moved to Johannesburg in order to train as a nurse. There, she met Walter Sisulu and married him in 1944. Walter Sisulu was at that time already in the African National Congress politically active. She was also a member of the ANC after marriage. The next several decades she became politically active against apartheid and for women's rights. She was serving longer sentences because of their activity. In 1994 she was after the elections a member of the South African Parliament.

From 1993 to 2003 Sisulu was the president of the World Peace Council.

You and Walter Sisulu had five children. Lindiwe Sisulu was your daughter from 2004 to 2009 Minister of Housing and Minister of Defence since 2009, South Africa. Her son Max Sisulu is speaker of the National Assembly since 2009, their son Zwelakhe Sisulu editor of the New Nation and 1994 to 1997 Head of the South African Broadcasting Corporation.
