Alectrosaurus

Alectrosaurus olseni, reconstruction

  • Central Asia
  • Alectrosaurus olseni

Alectrosaurus ( " single lizard" ) is a genus of tyrannosaurs ( Tyrannosauroidea ) from the Upper Cretaceous of Central Asia. Estimates assume a length of about 5 meters and a height of 2.50 meters.

Fund history

Charles W. Gilmore (1874-1945) published in 1933, the first scientific description of Alectrosaurus based on fossil remains from the Irish - Dabasu formation in the North China Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. Since the bones of Alectrosaurus were together with the arm bones of another dinosaur found at the scene, was a false reconstruction of Tyrannosauriers with unusually long arms. The arm bones were later identified as that of a representative of the Therizinosauroidea ( Segnosauria ).
