Alejandro García Caturla

Alejandro García Caturla ( born March 7, 1906 in Remedios, Villa Clara, † November 12, 1940 in Havana ) was a Cuban composer.

Caturla received as a child violin training and studied law in Havana. From 1925 to 1927, he then continued his musical studies in Paris with Nadia Boulanger. After his return he founded in Remedios a chamber orchestra and the magazine Los minor istas, but of which appeared only one output.

He worked then as a violinist with the Philharmonic and the Symphony Orchestra of Havana and founded in Caibarién the Sociedad de Conciertos with which he performed the works of Debussy, Ravel and de Falla. On November 12, 1940, he was a murder victim.

In addition to several orchestral works, which were also international attention - so led Leopold Stokowski his compositions in New York and Philadelphia - he composed numerous works for piano and 1934-1937 the opera " Manita en el suelo " for puppets and actors on a libretto by Alejo Carpentier, which premiered in a reconstruction in Havana in 1985.
