Aleksandr Gennadievich Kurosh

Alexander Gennadjewitsch Kurosch (Russian Александр Геннадьевич Курош; * 6 Januarjul / January 19 1908greg in Jarzewo, .. † May 18, 1971 in Moscow) was a Soviet mathematician who worked on algebra and specifically with group theory.

Life and work

Alexander Gennadjewitsch Kurosch came from a poor background. At 15, he went to Moscow and presented with very good marks for the entrance examination for the textile industry from, but was considered too young. He went back to his hometown to work as an accountant and besides attending school in evening classes. In 1924 he began his studies at the University of Smolensk, where he attended lectures by Pavel Alexandrov who promoted him. He was particularly impressed by the lectures of Emmy Noether, which he heard in Moscow in 1928. He continued his studies at the Moscow State University, et al continued in O. Schmidt and shifted his interests increasingly on the topology of the group theory. In 1932 he became a lecturer there in 1937 and professor in 1936 after he received his doctorate with Pavel Alexandrov with the study of infinite groups (Russian doctor, corresponds to the habilitation in the West). 1949 until his death in 1971 he held the chair of higher algebra at the Moscow State University. He also taught at other Moscow universities.

Kurosch began in 1932, inspired by the work of Otto Schreier to work on free products of groups, and proved his theorem on subgroups in a paper in Mathematische Annalen. Kourosh was also known for one of the first modern textbooks on group theory, which he completed in 1940 and in 1944 appeared ( in second, completely revised edition 1952). Kurosch also worked in other areas of algebra such as ring theory and category theory ( which he organized a seminar in the late 1950s in Moscow) and published in 1960, another textbook Lectures on general algebra.

Kurosch was since 1933 the Council of the Moscow Mathematical Society and was at times its vice-president.

His wife soy Kischkina was also a mathematician.
