Aleksandrs Starkovs

Aleksandrs Starkovs ( born July 26, 1955 in Madona; Russian Александр Петрович Старков, Alexander Petrovich Starkow ) is a former Latvian football player and current coach.

As a coach, he led Skonto Riga and Spartak Moscow.

Starkovs trained discount from 1992 to 2004 and the Latvian national team of 2001 to 2004. Recent post he took over after the disastrous results of the national team in the qualifiers for the 2002 World Cup and led them to their greatest success, qualifying for the 2004 European Championship with a win on the bronze medalist Turkey. After this success as a coach, he moved to Spartak Moscow, but had to resign due to Fanprotesten in April 2006. From 2007 to 2013 he held the office of the Latvian national team again.

As an active player, Starkovs worked as a striker and has spent almost his entire career at Daugava Rīga, where he was able to achieve 110 goals in 301 games.

In November 2003 he was appointed to mark UEFA's Jubilee by the Latvian Association for the Golden Player of Latvia, the best players of the past 50 years.
