Alessandro Longo

Alessandro Longo ( born December 31, 1864 in Amantea (Cosenza ), Italy, † November 3, 1945 in Naples) was an Italian composer and musicologist.

After studying at the Conservatory of Naples, he was there from 1887 piano teacher and director in 1944.

As a composer, he was able successfully to combine the thorough German instrumental notation with the Italian vocal tradition.

Today he is known mainly because of its comprehensive edition of the piano works of Domenico Scarlatti. He provided all 544 piano sonatas with numbers ( Longo number), who served for many years for their identification. The Longo numbering is now largely superseded by that of Ralph Kirkpatrick.
