Alex van Heerden

Alex van Heerden ( born November 23, 1974 in Port Elizabeth, † January 7, 2009 in Cape Town) was a South African musician (trumpet, accordion, vocals ) of the Cape jazz.

Life and work

Van Heerden taught himself at the age of 17 years trumpet. He was then a member of Robbie Jansen's Sons of Table Mountain and also played with Winston Mankunku. Together with Hilton Schilder, with whom he toured several times until 2008 in Switzerland, he founded the duo RockArt, the traditional South African music fused with contemporary genres. Even more in the electronic field, he worked with the Swedish music producer Håkan Lidbo. With his brother, guitarist Derek Gripper, he created acoustic landscapes which are based on the music of the Western Cape. He also took on with farm belt.

Van Heerden was killed in a car accident.
