Alexander Grant (athlete)

Alex Grant (actually Alexander Grant Jr., born April 16, 1874 in St. Marys, † October 13, 1946 in Narberth, Pennsylvania) was a Canadian middle and long distance runners.

As a student of the University of Pennsylvania in 1899, he was U.S. champion in mile run and, together with his brother Dick Grant, in the five-mile run.

The following year, he was nominated as the U.S. champion over 880 yards and the two-mile steeplechase of his university for the Olympic Games in Paris in 1900. Like his brother Dick, who was seconded from Harvard University and took in the marathon, he was officially assigned to the U.S. team. In Paris, Alex Grant resigned from about 800 m in the flow. About 4000 m steeplechase, he did not reach the target. He is said to have waived a start in the 1500 -meter run, because its finale on a Sunday took place ( many participants of the games in Paris refused on Sunday to contest contests for religious reasons ).

Despite this rather disappointing Olympic results Alex Grant continue enjoying success at national level: From 1901 to 1903, he was three times U.S. champion in the mile run. Other U.S. Championship title he won in 1902 and 1903, and in 1904 five miles over two miles.
