Life

Alexander Hamilton was the son of Archibald Hamilton, 9th Duke of Hamilton and his wife Harriet Stewart of Galloway. He succeeded his father as 10th Duke of Hamilton 1819. Alexander was educated at Harrow and at Oxford University. In 1802 he was Member of Parliament for Lancashire and Lord Lieutenant of Lanarkshire. From 1806 to 1807, he was British Ambassador in Russia, and then a member of the Privy Council. From 1820-22 he was also Grand Master of Masons in Scotland.

Hamilton was a famous dandy and had an extraordinary interest in mummies; what went so far that he asked the experts Thomas Pettigrew to mummify him after his death. This wish was fulfilled and he was buried at his Scottish estate in the Hamilton Palace.

The Duke was married since 1810 with Susan Euphemia ( 1786-1859 ), daughter of William Beckford, with whom he had two children:

  • William Alexander Anthony (1811-1863), 11th Duke of Hamilton
  • Susan Harriet (1814-1889), was from 1832-1850 married to Henry Pelham- Clinton, 5th Duke of Newcastle -under- Lyne
