Alexander Ivanovich Ostermann-Tolstoy

Alexander Ivanovich Ostermann - Tolstoy (Russian: Александр Иванович Остерман - Толстой, scientific transliteration Aleksandr Ivanovich Osterman - Tolstoy, * 1770/72; † February 11, 1857 in Le Petit- Saconnex, Switzerland ) was an officer in the Russian army in time the Napoleonic Wars. He was a great-grandson of Heinrich Johann Friedrich Ostermann.

Life

Ostermann - Tolstoy fought in 1790 with distinction in the campaigns against Turkey and Poland.

In 1798 he became Major General and was awarded in 1805 as a lieutenant general in command of the Russian Corps, which carried out a diversionary attack in northern Germany together with Swedish and English auxiliaries. After his return he became governor of Saint Petersburg. In 1806 he led a division in Bennigsen's army and fought, as well as in 1807 against the French. He took a major role in the battles of Borodino and Tarutino. 1813 Ostermann - Tolstoy ( 21-22. May) was wounded in the Battle of Bautzen, then fought at Dresden.
