Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Tallinn

The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral (Estonian: Aleksander Nevski katedraal, Russian Александро - Невский собор ) is a landmark of the Estonian capital Tallinn is located on Cathedral Hill ( Toompea ), more precisely on the Lossi plats ( " Castle Square " ) between the Estonian Parliament and the residence of the German Ambassador. It was named after the Russian national hero and saint Alexander Nevsky Yaroslavich. She is like most Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is a symbol of Russification in the late 19th century.

History

The Nevsky Cathedral was built between 1894/1895 and 1900 as a Russian Orthodox Cathedral of Mikhail Preobrazhensky in the then government of Estonia of the Russian Empire. On location on Toompea a Luther monument was originally provided, whose construction was prohibited by the Russian authorities, however. The consecration of the Cathedral took place on 30 April 1900. The construction cost of almost 600,000 rubles, there were approximately 430,000 donated and paid 150,000 rubles from the state.

While the independence of Estonia, the Cathedral, which was seen as a symbol of Russification, should be demolished in 1924. Construction and Home Affairs

The icons of the iconostasis and icon boxes were painted in St. Petersburg on copper and zinc plates. The windows are decorated with stained glass, also there are paintings and mosaics.
