Alexander Rollett

Alexander Rollett (* July 14, 1834 in Baden bei Wien, Lower Austria, † October 1, 1903 in Graz- Geidorf ) was an Austrian physiologist and histologist.

Life

After attending the schools of Wiener Neustadt and Melk Alexander Rollett studied at the Vienna University of Medicine, where he especially of the forces acting on the Josephinum Karl Ludwig (1816-1895) and by Ernst Wilhelm Bridge (1819-1892), whose assistant he of 1858-1863 was, was excited to do scientific work and where he follows his interest in physiology, was, while still studying at the Institute of Physiology.

1863 took over Rollett the first professor of physiology and histology of the newly established Faculty of Medicine, Karl- Franzens- University in Graz. From 1863 he was also a board until his death at this faculty. He was also 1872-1903 four times rector of the University of Graz, most recently in 1902. On June 4, 1895, he asked in this function in a commencement address Kaiser Franz Joseph I to open the main building newly built by laying the final stone.

Rollett underwent numerous publications Graz into an international center of physiological training and education. In 1864 he became a member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, 1882 corresponding member of the Societas Medicorum Svecana (Stockholm) and in 1892 a corresponding member of the Royal Bavarian Academy of Sciences. In 1893, he became President of the Styrian Chamber of Physicians.

In addition to his work as a teacher is operated Rollett also political: he was member of parliament in Styria and council in Graz.

Rollett was the son of Charles Rollett (1805-1869), town and spa doctor in Baden bei Wien, grandson of Anton Rollett (1778-1842), brother of the doctor and university professor Emil Rollett (1835-1923), nephew of Hermann Rollett (1819 -1904 ) and, with his wife, Rosa, born Wendl, father of Priscilla, Humbert (1879 -? ), Erich, Edwin ( 1889-1964 ) and Octavia Aigner - Rollett ( 1877-1959 ), the first woman, 1907 in Graz as a doctor opened a practice.

Alexander Rollett died in the early hours of October 1, 1903 in the home Harrachgasse 21 [note 1], Graz - Geidorf; He was buried on 3 October of the year in the central cemetery in Graz, Group X.

The immediate successor of Rollett as head of department at the University of Graz was Oskar Zoth ( 1864-1933 ).
