Alexander Ross (fur trader)

Alexander Ross ( * May 9, 1783, † October 23, 1856 ) was a born in Scotland Canadian fur traders and explorers.

After about 1805 to Upper Canada - Ontario today - had emigrated, he undertook on behalf of the Pacific Fur Company of John Jacob Astor traveled extensively in the Oregon Territory. He participated in the founding of the branch Astoria and explored alternative routes of the Okanagan Trail. As 1813, the North West Company, the Pacific Fur Company took over, he continued working on their behalf.

As in 1818, this company sent an expedition into the territory of the Teton Range in Wyoming, were Ross and the trapper Daniel Potts among the first white explorers who discovered the geothermal activities of today's Yellowstone National Park.

After 1821, the Hudson 's Bay Company, the North West Company took over, Ross worked four more years on their behalf, before moving to the Red River colony - today's Manitoba - retired and worked as a sheriff and a member of the Council.
