Alexander Schmidt (physiologist)

Hermann Adolf Alexander Schmidt (. * 15 Maijul / May 27 1831greg on the island poppy; .. . † 10 Apriljul / April 22 1894greg in Dorpat ) was a deutschbaltischer physiologist, the world through his work on the thickening of blood had become known.

Life

Alexander Schmidt studied from 1850 at the University of Dorpat story, but soon switched to medicine. After receiving his doctorate in Dorpat 1858, he continued his studies at the University of Vienna and the University of Berlin.

Under Felix Hoppe -Seyler in Berlin he undertook his first study of the flocculation of muscle fibers. From 1866 to 1867 he worked with Carl Friedrich Wilhelm Ludwig in Leipzig. After the retirement of his old teacher Friedrich Heinrich Bidder he folgter after him to the chair in Dorpat. Schmidt taught until his death in 1894 at the University of Dorpat, he stayed till 1889 board in 1885 as rector.
