Muhu
Muhu ( German Moon or poppy seeds, Swedish Moon ) is the third largest island of Estonia, and a rural community. It belongs to the Moon Sound Islands.
Location and population
Located in the northern Baltic Sea island with about 1,697 inhabitants ( 2010) is a community Muhu ( Muhu vald ) part of the district Saare ( Saare maakond ), which also includes the neighboring island of Saaremaa southwest part. The municipality covers 198 km ².
In the north, steep Abrasionsküsten find with high cliffs. The vegetation is typical of a karst landscape with juniper bushes. In Külasema there are Neolithic tombs. Iron Age stone boxes lie on the north and west coasts. In the southwest of the Wallburg Muhu is. Also Schalensteine unknown age, there are on the island.

For the rural community Muhu include the Estonian islands Kesselaid, Suurlaid, Viirelaid and Võilaid.
Muhu is connected through a 1896 -scale, navigable dam with Orissaare on Saaremaa. From Kuivastu in the southeast regular ferry services to Virtsu (Werder ) on the Estonian mainland. In winter, when the sound is frozen deep enough, you can reach the island via a marked route on the ice with land vehicles.
Together with the islands of Saaremaa, Hiiumaa and Vormsi as well as a number of smaller islands Muhu is part of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, which covers an area of about 4040 km ² and a water area of approximately 11,150 km ².
The island is known for the last still operating windmills in Estonia as well as because of the Battle of Moon Sound from the autumn of 1917 between Russian and German naval units.
