Koguva

Koguva ( German Kogguwa ) is a village on the Estonian island of Muhu.

Koguva lies in the west of Muhu on the Gulf of Riga in the Baltic Sea. It belongs administratively to the municipality Muhu (Estonian Muhu vald ) in Saare County. The village has 30 inhabitants ( 2000).

History

Koguva was first mentioned in documents in 1532. The Livonian Order Master Wolter von Plettenberg stated therein under certain conditions the farmers Hansken, whose son and all descendants to country outdoors. See the following rulers of Muhu accepted until the 19th century the charter of freedom. It is the only surviving document of its kind in Estonia today.

Open Air Museum of Muhu

In the Estonian writer Juhan Koguva Smuul, a descendant of Hansken, on the farm Tooma ( Tooma talu ) was born in 1922. The house and the yard of his family were in 1973 to the museum. There in 1990, the island museum was founded by Muhu. It offers an insight into the traditional life and work on Muhu. Affiliated to the Museum are a museum of textile art of Muhu, a historic school house, a modern gallery and a building for exhibitions. In the immediate vicinity is located on the Baltic Sea, the memorial to Juhan Smuul.
