Salme Parish

Salme is a rural municipality in the Estonian Saare County with an area of ​​115.07 km ². It has 1249 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2009).

Salme is located in the southwest of the island of Saaremaa. In addition to the eponymous capital ( 583 inhabitants), the country parish includes the villages Anseküla, Easte, Hindu, Imara, Järve, Kaimri, Kaugatoma, Lahetaguse, Lassi, Lomala, Lou, Länga, Läätsa, Metsalõuka, Mõisaküla, Möldri, Rahuste, Suurna, Tehumardi, Tiirimetsa, Toomalõuka, Üüdibe, Ula and Vintri. The municipality covers about half of the Sõrve Peninsula ( German: Sworbe ).

The landscape on the peninsula Sõrve (total length 32 km, maximum width 10 km) is interesting for nature lovers and hiking tourists. In 1944 Sõrve devastating battles between the Wehrmacht and the Red Army were held. Because today still remember some preserved military buildings and a Soviet memorial from 1967 on the beach at Tehumardi that the nightly battle of Tehumardi the late evening of October 8th 1944 is dedicated.
