West Estonian archipelago

The Moon Sound Islands ( estn Lääne- Eesti saarestik ) form an entity belonging to Estonia archipelago in the eastern part of the Baltic Sea.

Islands

The group of islands with a total area of about 4000 square kilometers includes the larger islands

  • Saaremaa ( Osel engl )
  • Hiiumaa ( Dago engl )
  • Muhu ( engl Moon )
  • Vormsi ( engl Worms)

And about 500 smaller islands. The Moon Sound Islands are separated by the Estonian mainland on the east by the Moon Sound ( estn Väinameri ).

Straits

The larger islands are separated by straits following:

  • Voosi kurk between the mainland ( Noarootsi Peninsula ) and Vormsi
  • Hari kurk ( Moon Sound ) between Vormsi and Hiiumaa
  • Soela väin ( Sele Sound ) between Hiiumaa and Saaremaa
  • Väike väin between Saaremaa and Muhu
  • Suur väin between Muhu and the mainland

Muhu and Saaremaa today combines a 3.6 km long dam ( Väinatamm ), which is also accessible by car. It was inaugurated construction on July 27, 1896 after two years. About a permanent connection between the mainland and the island Muhu over the Suur väin is currently being hotly debated in Estonia.
