West Estonian archipelago
The Moon Sound Islands ( estn Lääne- Eesti saarestik ) form an entity belonging to Estonia archipelago in the eastern part of the Baltic Sea.
Islands
The group of islands with a total area of about 4000 square kilometers includes the larger islands
And about 500 smaller islands. The Moon Sound Islands are separated by the Estonian mainland on the east by the Moon Sound ( estn Väinameri ).
Straits
The larger islands are separated by straits following:
- Voosi kurk between the mainland ( Noarootsi Peninsula ) and Vormsi
- Hari kurk ( Moon Sound ) between Vormsi and Hiiumaa
- Soela väin ( Sele Sound ) between Hiiumaa and Saaremaa
- Väike väin between Saaremaa and Muhu
- Suur väin between Muhu and the mainland
Muhu and Saaremaa today combines a 3.6 km long dam ( Väinatamm ), which is also accessible by car. It was inaugurated construction on July 27, 1896 after two years. About a permanent connection between the mainland and the island Muhu over the Suur väin is currently being hotly debated in Estonia.
