Alexander Tcherepnin

Alexander Nikolayevich Tcherepnin (* 9.jul / January 21 1899greg in Saint Petersburg, .. † September 29, 1977 in Paris) was a Russian composer and pianist.

Life

Tcherepnin received the first instruction from his father Nikolai Tcherepnin, and then studied at the Conservatory of Petrograd and in Tbilisi and was eventually disciple of Isidore Philipp. After concert tours as a pianist he settled down in 1934 in Shanghai. In China he met his future wife, the pianist Lee Hsien Ming, know. 1938 to 1945 he was a teacher at the Conservatory of Russian music in Paris. From 1949 to 1964 he was a professor at the University of Chicago, after which he lived as a pianist in New York City. Even his sons Ivan and Serge became known as the composer.

Works

Tcherepnin composed four operas ( Ol - Ol, 1928, The Marriage of Sobeide, 1933, The Marriage, 1937, The Nymph and the Farmer, 1952), five ballets, four symphonies, six concertos, a concerto for harp and orchestra, four suites, a Serenade for Strings, pieces for the accordion, two piano sonatas, songs, a Mass and other liturgical works. Tcherepnin has also written several works for wind instruments / band.
