Alexandre Istrati

Alexandre Istrati ( born March 9, 1915 in Dorohoi, Romania, † 28 October 1991 in Paris) was a Romanian- French painter and one representative of the Informal.

Life

Istrati began with nine years to paint. In the years 1932-1937 he studied law at the University of Bucharest, which he graduated in 1937 with the " diploma de licenţă " (BA). In parallel, he studied painting with Camil Ressu 1938 and received his diploma at the Art Academy of Bucharest, where he taught until 1947 as a professor. In 1939 he married the painter also Romanian Natalia Dumitresco, a student of Franz Sirató at the same academy. From 1941 to 1946 he presented his work from, especially in Bucharest.

Istrati and Dumitresco received through the mediation of the French Institute of Bucharest by the French State a scholarship for further study, so he and his wife in 1947 could move to Paris, where they arrived on October 9 at the Gare de Lyon.

About George Theodorescu, a Romanian scholarship for sculpture, the couple met the sculptor Constantin Brancusi on October 19, 1947 know. At his suggestion, she moved into a studio next to his in the Impasse Ronsin. During the period of their studies with André Lhote and at the École des Beaux -Arts, they visited the sculptor every Sunday. The friendly cooperation had stock until his death in 1957. They were his sole heir and was built in 1958 on a plot of land they left behind a studio of his own. In 1965 Istrati and his wife were given French citizenship.

As heir Brancusi, the couple handed over the works of his studio to the French State. Istrati planned together with his wife, a reconstruction of the Atelier Brancusi at the Centre Georges Pompidou, which was inaugurated in 1977. Together with Pontus Hultén, they wrote a biography of her friend Brâncuşi, which was published in 1986.

The couple Natalia Dumitresco and Alexandre Istrati deals, like Constantin Brancusi, his final resting place in the cemetery Montparnasse. A common grave stone bears their three names.
