Alfonso de Galarreta

Alfonso de Galarreta (* January 14, 1957 in Santander, Spain) is one of the four bishops of the Society of St. Pius X ( SSPX ).

Life

Galarreta was born in Spain but emigrated with his family to Argentina early. In 1975 he joined in La Plata in the seminary. In October 1978 he joined the International Seminary of St. Pius X after Ecône in Switzerland.

In August 1980, he was ordained in Buenos Aires by Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre a priest. After his ordination he taught at the International Seminary in La Reja in Argentina. From 1985 to 1988 he was superior ( manager) of the SSPX District South America.

On June 30, 1988 he was ordained with three other priests by the founder of the SSPX, Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, Bishop. But because these ordinations were carried out against the will of the Pope, Pope John Paul II issued a decree which declared the excommunication of Lefebvre and the four bishops ordained.

The SSPX denies the occurrence of excommunication with reference to an existing " church emergency", which is why Bishop Alfonso de Galarreta within the SSPX continue sacraments, especially confirmations and ordinations donated.

On 28 July 1991 he assisted in São Fidélis, Rio de Janeiro (Brazil ) at the consecration of a bishop Licínio Rangel, chairman of the Association of Priests of St. John Mary Vianney.

In 1994 he was Superior of the SSPX District of Spain and Portugal in 2002 and the second assistant of the SSPX.

January 21, 2009, Pope Benedict XVI lifted. the excommunication of Bishop Alfonso de Galarretas on.

End of February 2009 he was appointed by Bernard Fellay, head of the SSPX, the rector of the seminary in La Reja. He is the successor of Richard Williamson, who due to disobedience lost this function with respect to the Fraternity.
