Alfred Elmore

Alfred W. Elmore ( born June 18, 1815 in Clonakilty, County Cork, † January 24, 1881 in London) was an Irish- British painter and illustrator.

Elmore 1842 went to Paris and Munich and spent two years in Rome. After his return to England he made through the pictures:

  • Rienzi on the forum at Rome and
  • Origin of the dispute of the Guelphs and Ghibellines

Known, but especially by his repeatedly engraved and cut wood

  • Invention of the stocking loom (1847 ).

Although he created later images sometimes suffer lack of execution more carefully, but are full of life and expression, and crusty in color. Among these are:

  • The Tuileries June 20, 1792 (1860 ),
  • Marie Antoinette in the Temple ( 1861),
  • Louis XIII. and Louis XIV (1870 ),
  • The Mary Queen of Scots and Darnley (1877 ),
  • Judith and Holifernes,
  • Columbus in Porto Santo,
  • Pompeii (1878 ) and
  • Lucrezia Borgia.
