Alfred Jones (boxer)

Alfred " Al " Jones ( born October 1, 1946 in Detroit ) is a former boxer from the United States and bronze medalist of the Olympic Games of 1968 in the middleweight division.

Boxing career

Alfred Jones was during his competitive career around 1.75 m tall and punched in the middleweight ( 75 kg ). He won the 1965 National Golden Gloves, the 1968 U.S. Championships and the U.S. Olympic excretion 1968. On August 16, 1968, he defeated also in an international match Ewald Wichert from Germany.

In October 1968, he finally took part in the 19th Summer Olympic Games in Mexico City, where he was able to win a bronze medal. He defeated while Marcelo Quiñones from Peru 5-0, Raúl Marrero from Cuba 5:0 and Simon Georgiev from Bulgaria 4-1, before he was defeated in the semifinals against the British Christopher Finnegan 1:4.

In 1969 he became a professional and won in less than two years, twelve fights in a row, seven by knockout. After a serious knockout loss in February 1971 against Dave Thach, he resigned from active boxing.
