Ali Mahdi Muhammad

Ali Mahdi Mohammed (Arabic علي مهدي محمد ) ( born 1939 ) is a Somali politician and warlord who in 1991 after the fall of dictator Siad Barre proclaimed himself as the new president of the country. The choice of name is Mahdi, reminiscent of an earlier national hero of Somalia, Mohammed Abdullah Hassan.

In 1991, it was the separation of the USC, the capital and the country. A civil war began, the UNOSOM could not reconcile the rival parties.

Although let Aidid exclaim after the withdrawal of U.S. troops to counter- president, joined his chief financial backer and ally, Osman Hassan Ali " Ato " to Mahdi over and trained with this and Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed since 1997 an unstable State in which Mahdi only more exercised the presidency, but was not regarded as President. Aidid's followers and allies formed a kind of counter-government.

With the agreement on two other transitional governments or interim president since 2000 (see Transitional National Government) Mahdi largely disappeared into obscurity.
