Aller Canal

Course of Allerkanals

The Allerkanal is a middle of the 19th century artificially applied water in Lower Saxony. The 18 km long channel runs between Wolfsburg and Gifhorn. It is used to protect agricultural land against floods of all. The almost straight channel drains water from the River Aller faster than it in this section of the Aller- glacial valley is the river in his strong meandered course possible.

Course

The 1863 after three years of construction completed Allerkanal starts at Weyhausen just behind the city of Wolfsburg, where he receives inflow from the Little Aller. Here also the Aller branches in their course of river course and the canal. The channel leads almost straight through the wetland Barnbruch up to Gifhorn. Directly behind the Barnbruch at Osloß the Aller Canal is crossed by the Elbe Lateral Canal in a trough bridge. The city Gifhorn he deals go south. West of Gifhorn the channel uses the developed and widened the stream bed of the secret vineyard. 5 km west of Gifhorn at Brennecke bridge on the B 188 opens the channel in the Aller. About one kilometer before the canal water falls about three feet deep over a weir. The river flows parallel a few miles north of the canal and forms in this shallow area of the river Aller glacial valley engräumige loops that reduce the natural way the outflow speed.

Construction

The construction of the Allerkanals between 1860-63 was preceded by a treaty between Prussia, Hanover and Braunschweig on the regulation of Aller. Purpose was the regulation of the spring flood of Aller and contribute to the drainage of the former swampland of Barnbruchs. The channel is only about 5 m wide and 1 m deep. To assess the performance of its builder, one should remember that at that time hardly any technical aids were available and workers dug him only with shovels.

On channel between Brennecke Brück and Gifhorn angle, a memorial stone was erected. It bears the inscription:

Water quality

The Lower Saxony Water Quality Report 2004 assesses the chemical water pollution as well as the Allerkanal the Aller overall as moderately polluted ( Class II ). The fact that the fascines were forfeited largely as bank stabilization, the channel has turned into a semi-natural water bodies. The canal runs through the deciduous forest in the Barnbruchs so that it is shaded. This prevents weeds of the waters run, which is the case in many places the most unshaded all.
