Allobroges

The Allobrogians (Latin Allobroges ) were a Celtic tribe that was conquered by Caesar.

History

The field of Allobrogians stretched between the Rhône and Isère up to Lake Geneva. In Genava Geneva, after Caesar extremum oppidum Allobrogum, Rhone River was the border of the territory of the Helvetii. Its capital Vienne, in the early days of a simple fortified place, had developed at the time of the emperor Augustus the city and the center of a vast territory between the Isere, the Rhone, the lake and the Graian. They were defeated in 121 BC along with the Arverni of the Roman army under Quintus Fabius Maximus at their main town Vienne and then integrated into the Roman province of Gallia Narbonensis. 61 BC there was a revolt of the last Allobrogians.

They also played a significant role in the Catiline conspiracy, because they betrayed Catiline to the then consul Cicero.

The meaning of the name: Allobroges ( " who live in foreign areas ", see also welsh allfro, " stranger " ), compare Nitiobrogen ( " living in own territory ").
