Almannaskarðsgöng

The Almannaskarðsgöng is a road tunnel in the south of Iceland a few kilometers east of Höfn on Hringvegur (Ring Road No. 1). The tunnel was opened after a one-year period 2005 and 1312 meters long. The tunnel passes under the Almannaskarð, a 153 meter high ball and replaces the old road over the pass. Despite the low altitude mountain pass road from autumn until spring closed again and in winter even very often, so that the practically the only road link in the east of Iceland was interrupted by Reykjavík ( the only alternative was to the northern ring road via Akureyri, what a detour meant by several hundred kilometers ). The old pass road was also tight, just gravel and with up to 17 % slope is very steep.

The tunnel is two lanes and illuminated. The north portal is located at 82 meters above sea level, the south portal at 39 meters, which corresponds to a slope of 4.6%.
