This saw even in the 1930s, quite adventurous of how one can recognize by extant plays about on the Holtavörðuheiði. Not for nothing presents itself at this high level ( plaque on Kattahrýggur ) a pair of proud that this has dared adventure photographer.

Only certain parts of the road between Egilsstaðir south to the coast at Breiddalsvík still present itself as a gravel road. The alternative through the East Fjords is already paved. The road is, however, constantly improved, it has already been paved almost universally, last approximately between Egilsstaðir and Mývatn on the desert-like plateau Möðrudalsöræfi. New routes and the opening of tunnels shorten the route again and again, such as by expanding the tunnel under the Hvalfjörður in Akranes and the recently opened tunnel under the pass Almannaskarð east of Höfn. Here was formerly the largest gradient of the ring road.
