Alonso Álvarez de Pineda

Alonso Álvarez de Pineda († 1520 on the Rio Panuco - at today Tampico ) was a Spanish conquistador.

He was commissioned by the governor of Jamaica, Francisco de Garay with the immediate exploration of discovered by Juan Ponce de León in 1513, Florida in 1519. Coming from Jamaica, Cuba west Driving around Pineda reached the Gulf Coast of Florida probably in the Apalchee Bay. He then headed west and discovered the mouth of the Mississippi River and then traveled to the mouth of the Rio Panuco - at today Tampico. He should then set up a branch in 1520 on behalf Garays, but was killed in confrontation with the indigenous inhabitants. The uprising of the people against the Spanish conquistadors was defeated by Hernán Cortés.
