Aloys Sprenger

Aloys Sprenger ( born September 3, 1813 in Wet Reith, Tyrol, † December 19, 1893 in Heidelberg) was an Austrian Orientalist.

Life

Sprenger studied at the University of Vienna in addition to medicine and the natural sciences especially Oriental Languages ​​, 1836 went here to London, where he worked as a laborer of the Earl of Munster worked at his great work on the history of war sciences in the Muslim peoples, 1843 to Calcutta and in 1848 appointed provost of the College in Delhi, in which position he was transferred to the Hindustani many lessons writings from European languages ​​.

In 1848 he was sent to Lucknow to produce a catalog of the local Royal Library, of which the first volume appeared in 1854 in Calcutta. This book, with its lists of Persian poets, his careful description of all the major works of Persian poetry and his valuable biographical material was a valuable tool for the exploration of the New Persian literature.

1850 Sprenger was appointed examiner, interpreters of the Government and Secretary of the Asiatic Society in Calcutta. In this capacity, Sprenger published several works, including " Dictionary of the Technical terms used in the sciences of the Musulmans " (1854 ) and " Ibn Hajar 's biographical dictionary of persons who knew Mohammed " (1856 ).

Since 1857 Sprenger was a professor of Oriental languages ​​at the University of Bern, but moved in November 1881 to Heidelberg. Its rich collection of Arabic, Persian, hindostanischer and other manuscripts and prints had bought the Royal Library in Berlin.
