Aloys Wach

Aloys Ludwig Wach ( born April 30, 1892 in Lambach, Upper Austria, † April 18, 1940 in Braunau am Inn, Upper Austria; actually Wachlmeier, sometimes Wachelmayr ) was a painter and graphic artist from Austria. Being strong expressionistic early work is now regarded as his greatest achievement and is of international significance. He later distanced himself from this direction.

Life

Wax decided early on in the artistic career and suffered some setbacks as a result. He was rejected by the Akademie in Munich and thus began his artistic training in 1909 in Vienna. From 1912 to 1913 he studied at the private art school Knirr and Sailer in Munich. During this time he met the graphic artist Jacob Steinhardt in Berlin and learned the newly opened The storm gallery and probably also familiar with the exhibition of the Blaue Reiter. Between 1913 and 1914 he attended the Académie Colarossi in Paris, where he became friends with Amedeo Modigliani and got to know some painters in the Bateau - Lavoir. His works from this period include expressionist- cubist drawings, etchings and woodcuts. He finished his studies with Heinrich Altherr in Stuttgart.

Fascinated by the idea of Expressionism, he was a member of the " storm " in Berlin and participated in the period 1918-1922 at various expressionist journals, including the journals The box of books, The Art Journal, The Way, The Action, The Tempest, The Zweemann and the creators. In 1919 he moved to Braunau am Inn, where he lived until a stay in Rome 1925/1926 until his death. 1919-1920 was the woodcut cycle of the prodigal son. In addition, he created from 1920 expressionistic still life, landscapes and portraits. 1923 Wax in the development of Innviertler Artist Guild ( ICG ) involved and one of the first guild master. Wax was friends with Egon Ranshofen - Wertheimer.

Later he devoted himself more to religious themes, created by 1930/1933, among others, stained glass windows for the hospital church in Braunau. After the annexation of Austria was forbidden to paint him was granted.

A collection of his works are exhibited at the Duke Castle in Braunau.
