Aloysius Ambrozic

Aloysius Matthew Cardinal Ambrozic (* as Alojzij Ambrožič on January 27, 1930 in Gabrje, community Dobrova - Polhov Gradec, Slovenia, † August 26, 2011 in Toronto ) was a Canadian clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Toronto.

Life

Aloysius Matthew Ambrozic was born in 1930 in Slovenia as Alojzij Ambrožič. The family fled to Austria in May 1945. He attended secondary school in Ljubljana, in the refugee camps in Vetrinj ( Viktring Klagenfurt ), Peggez ( near Lienz ) and Spittal an der Drau, where he graduated before his family emigrated to Canada in 1948.

As a seminarian at the Almo Collegio Capranica, he studied Catholic theology and philosophy and received on 4 June 1955, the sacrament of Holy Orders. He then worked in the pastoral community and continued his theological studies at the Angelicum in Rome continued. He worked from 1960 to 1967 as a lecturer for the subject of exegesis of the New Testament at St. Augustine seminar, the Diocesan Seminary in Toronto. In 1967 he received his doctorate with a thesis on the Mark the Evangelist at the Theological Faculty of the Julius- Maximilians- University of Würzburg. From 1970 to 1976 he taught exegesis at the Toronto School of Theology (TST ) and was also Dean of St. Augustine seminar.

Pope Paul VI. appointed Aloysius Ambrozic 1976 titular bishop of Valabria and appointed him as Auxiliary Bishop of Toronto. In 1986, Pope John Paul II appointed Koadjutorerzbischof and 1990, then Archbishop of Toronto. Pope John Paul II took him on 21 February 1998 as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Santi Marcellino e Pietro on the College of Cardinals.

On December 16, 2006, Pope Benedict XVI. be for reasons of age pre- mounted resignation and appointed Archbishop Thomas Collins as his successor.

He was Grand Prior of the Lieutenancy of Canada - Toronto Equestrian Order of the Holy grave in Jerusalem.
