Alpes Cottiae

Alpes Cottiae was a Roman province and was one of the Alpine provinces of the Roman Empire, whose main task was to secure the connection paths through the mountain passes. For the Alpes Cottiae this was on the route from Augusta Taurinum (Turin ) to Brigantio ( Briançon ) and Eburodunum ( Embrun ) the climb to the pass at Mons Matrona ( Col de Montgenevre, 1850 m ).

The province is named after Cottius, a local Ligurerfürsten whose territory was incorporated into the Roman Empire under Augustus. The governor of the province were prefect from the equestrian order.
