Alpes Maritimae
Alpes Maritimae ( Latin for " sea near the Alps" ) was a province of the Roman Empire.
It stretched from the Mediterranean coast between Nice and Monaco in today's far inland. The underflow of Varus ( Var) was a border river in the west, the sources of the Po were in the north at that, as well as the eastern slope of Caenia Mons ( Mont Pelat, 3053 m) and the southern slope of Vesulus Mons ( Monte Viso, 3841 m). Alpes Maritimae was established after the Roman subjugation Ligurian tribes in the summer of 14 BC under the management of a chivalrous prefect. AD 63 was the province of the Latin rights. From then practiced a procurator ( praeses ) from the administrative power. Under Diocletian the area around parts of Gallia Narbonensis and Alpes Cottiae was expanded and assigned to the Gallic prefecture.
