The Var is a river in southern France, which runs in the Provence- Alpes- Côte d' Azur. It rises near the hamlet Estenc in the municipality of Entraunes near the Col de la Cayolle, drained generally in a southeasterly direction through the Maritime Alps and flows after 114 kilometers between Nice Airport and the village of Saint -Laurent -du -Var in the Mediterranean Sea. The river runs almost entirely in the Alpes -Maritimes and crosses over a distance of about ten kilometers and the Alpes -de -Haute -Provence.

Etymology

The river's name is derived from the Ligurian word for stream. After the river and the Var department is named, but which is no longer flowing through it today from him. The reason for this is that, no longer touches in 1860 when connecting the county of Nice to France, which Arrondissement Grasse, which was previously part of the Var, the newly formed department of Alpes- Maritimes was added to it and so the Var his eponymous department. This is the only case in which an eponymous river does not flow through the department.
